High-security locks

High-security lock discussions center on the keyway, the cylinder construction, and who can have additional keys cut.

The name alone does not describe a lock's mechanism. A restricted keyway has a particular internal profile that accepts its matching key blank. A hardened cylinder concerns the material used in the cylinder assembly. These are separate features, not interchangeable descriptions.

How the key arrangement works

In a cardholder system, keys are cut only for the cardholder. The card therefore belongs in the discussion when choosing the system and arranging additional keys. Decide who will hold it and how shared use of the space will be handled.

  • Restricted keyways define the blank that enters the cylinder.
  • Cardholder key cutting sets a condition for making additional keys.
  • Hardened cylinders describe a construction feature of the lock.
  • Cylinder dimensions determine compatibility with the surrounding hardware.

Match the cylinder to the door

An apartment entrance, an office door, and a storefront can use different lock formats. The existing cylinder length, lock body, and door thickness matter when considering a change.

A cylinder is only one part of the assembly. The bolt still needs to line up with the strike, and the door still needs to sit correctly in its frame. Changing the keyway does not adjust hinges or move the strike opening.

Common questions

What does a restricted keyway describe?

It describes the profile inside the cylinder and the corresponding key blank, rather than simply the visible shape of the key head.

Who can have cardholder-system keys cut?

Additional keys in that arrangement are cut only for the cardholder, so the card is part of planning key duplication.

Does every door accept the same cylinder?

No. Lock format, cylinder dimensions, and the existing door preparation must be considered together before selecting replacement hardware.
